About Hearing Loss

1 in 4 Canadians Report Hearing Loss

Many adults in Canada have hearing loss, but only a fraction of them seek treatment. Stats Canada estimates that 40% of adults between the ages of 20 and 79 have at least a slight hearing loss. For Canadians aged 60 to 79, almost 80% have hearing loss.

Impacts of Untreated Hearing Loss

The effects of hearing loss range from a minor nuisance to serious emotional and social consequences. A 1999 study 1999 by The National Council on the Aging (NCOA) surveyed over 2,000 adults over 50 that are hearing impaired. The resulted indicated that people with untreated hearing loss are more likely to report:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression, sadness and hopelessness
  • Reduced participation in social activities

Untreated hearing loss is not a harmless condition. Even though many of the impacts may not be visible, professional treatment can contribute to improving health and wellbeing.
