How common is hearing loss?

Roughly 10% of the general Canadian population have a hearing loss. That’s more than the population of Vancouver and Calgary combined! Specifically, 4.6% of individuals between 18 & 44 have difficulty hearing. This number only increases as we age, with 14% of individuals between 45 & 64, and 54% over the age of 65 experiencing significant hearing loss. That’s one in two people over the age of 65! By the time we reach 85, there is a 65% chance that you will have hearing loss that will impact your daily life. This makes hearing loss the number one health issue affecting seniors today. In fact, hearing loss ranks with arthritis, high blood pressure, and heart disease as one of the most common physical conditions. Surprisingly however, most people do not seek solutions for improved hearing, but instead live with the resulting negative effects. In fact, only about 1 in 5 people who have hearing loss are treated for it.
